无机房电梯的首要难题是在不设机房的条件下，如何将轿厢、对重、主机、控制柜、限速器等关键部件布置在一般电梯井道内。如果取消机房后，通过加大井道截面积尺寸或者增加井道顶层高度来解决这一问题，那将得不偿失。解决机房井道布置这个难题的主要途径是巧妙利用井道空间，研制特殊电梯部件和开发新型驱动方式。

　　无机房电梯常见的井道布置形式如下：

　　1)主机上置式：这一方案是采用专门设计制造的扁形盘式主机，使其能安放在井道顶层轿厢和井道壁之间，而把控制柜与顶层层门装成一体。其主要优点是，主机和限速器与有机房电梯受力工况相同以及控制柜调试维修方便;其主要缺点是，电梯额定载重量、额定速度和Z 大提升高度受主机外形尺寸制约，紧急盘车操作复杂困难。

　　2)主机下置式：这一方案是将驱动主机安放在底坑内，而把控制柜挂在底坑的轿厢和井道壁之间。其Z 大优点是，增加电梯额定载重量、额定速度和Z 大提升高度不受主机外形尺寸限制，紧急盘车操作方便容易;其主要缺点是，由于主机和限速器受力工况与普通电梯不同，因此必须进行改进设计。

　　3)主机放在轿厢上：这一方案将主机放在轿厢的顶部，控制柜放在轿厢侧面，这种布置方式随行电缆的数量比较多。

　　4)主机和控制柜放在井道侧壁开孔空间内：这一方案是将主机和控制柜安放在顶层井道侧壁预留开孔之内。其Z 大优点是，可以增加电梯额定载重量、额定速度和Z 大提升高度，能够选配普通电梯使用的主机和限速器，而且安装维修和紧急盘车操作也较方便;其主要缺点是，需要适当增加顶层预留开孔井道侧壁的厚度，在井道壁开孔外侧需装设检修门。
